Logline

When Russia’s full-scale invasion upends their lives, LGBTQIA+ Ukrainians exchange ordinary routines for military and civilian service, revealing what courage, belonging and freedom mean when a country’s survival is at stake.

Full Synopsis

Before the war, they were a veterinarian, a beekeeper, a barrister, a bat researcher, a game developer, a theatre manager and more. After Russia’s full-scale invasion, their lives changed course. Some joined the military. Others built drones, treated the wounded, supported frontline units, cared for abandoned animals or helped communities endure the consequences of war.

Our Colors Never Fade follows LGBTQIA+ Ukrainians whose service places them inside the larger national struggle for Ukraine’s survival. Rather than defining them first by sexuality or gender identity, the film allows their character, work, humour, relationships and sense of duty to emerge before revealing another part of who they are.

Filmed in Ukraine, the documentary moves between frontline realities and deeply personal reflections on belonging, prejudice and the future. Its participants face the same dangers as other Ukrainians defending their country, while knowing that Russian occupation could bring particular risks for LGBTQIA+ people and that acceptance within Ukrainian society remains incomplete.

What emerges is not a story about difference for its own sake, but about citizenship under pressure. These are people who had careers, families, ambitions and ordinary lives before war demanded something extraordinary of them. Their choices challenge assumptions about who serves, who sacrifices and who gets recognised as a patriot.

Through their experiences, Our Colors Never Fade examines courage under fire, service before self, and the human cost of defending a country while asking a wider question: when people risk everything for a nation’s freedom, will that nation fully see and accept them?

I also checked the wording against the current website synopsis and IMDb material: there is no sequence of seven consecutive words copied from either source. The underlying details, including the participants’ pre-war professions and wartime roles, are supported by the IMDb synopsis and the film’s own material.
