Neville travelled as a 5 year old with his sister from Jamaica to Coventry in 1960. The 70’s Coventry scene brought music to the youth of the day via Mecca dance halls, where Pete Waterman played his early sets. From within this relatively intolerant society of diverse culture emerged a kid, a cheeky West Indian who had a twinkle in his eye and was full of mischief. Neville Staple was passionate about music, his enthusiasm and ability won a him a place on stage as a ‘toaster’ and a dancer for Pete at his Monday night set at the Locarno. Neville caught the attention of Waterman later in life with his punk/ska band The Automatics who later became The Specials. No crystal ball could have told from those Monday nights at the Coventry Locarno, both Neville Staples and Manager Pete Waterman would hitch their wagon to a star and achieve such fame. ......After all they were just 2 Rude boys.
